October 17, 2016: Many municipalities around the country are large, sprawling metropolises that span many square miles. The Metro Boston area, however, is different. We are a mix of smaller fiefdoms that exist independent of one another. Despite our different names, different forms of government and different identities, we struggle with many of the same issues. Whether it's affordable housing, job creation, the environment or improving public schools, the cities of Metro Boston have a great deal in common.

As the weather becomes warmer and the calendar turns to the summer months, municipal government in Cambridge typically slows down, but not this year. In fact, the next few months will be filled with various meetings, hearings, and public process on three important issues that will shape the future of our city. If there has ever been a time to tune in and get involved in citywide conversations, now is the time.

CAMBRIDGE

On April 25, the city manager and Louis DePasquale and Jeana Franconi of the Finance Department presented the City Council and the public with the fiscal 2017 budget. In what is an annual tradition, next year’s budget continues to do something few municipalities are able to do. Once again, the city has managed the difficult balance of adding additional city services and programs while simultaneously keeping property taxes low.
